STRIVING FOR PERFECTION

You ever just, struggle? Being a musician can be fun and in the same breath a headache. We have a drive to get somewhere and when a challenge comes our way we can often find ourselves not feeling accomplished or insecure. When we strive for perfection or we long to sound like this or like that, we tend to lose our uniqueness and our creativity.

I can mostly say that majority of people reading this are musicians in a local church. Big or small, most of us are simply volunteers and not really making albums and on the road. Now that we’ve set the table for this topic, lets focus on why we choose to stress ourselves out and allow our insecurities to over take our creativity.

We listen to these worship albums and we hear the passion and spirit within the songs and wonder why don’t we have that here? What are we missing or what are we doing wrong?

For starters, end all comparison.

Comparison can slow or even kill whatever momentum your team may have in seeing some breakthrough happening in your church. When comparing yourself to something else, you are basically telling yourself that you’ll never be good enough. I’ve had this feeling MANY times. It is a huge downer and I’ve fallen into moments where I Ask myself “Should I even be doing this?”.

How do you get out of this state? Seek the Lord in what He is doing right now. Those big epic moments you see on YouTube or the perfect music arrangements you hear on live albums, those are meant for those moments. Find your moment. Find what the Lord is doing in you and with your team and you’ll have your epic moments. They might look and sound different from what you’ve watched and listened to, but they will be your epic moments with the Holy Spirit.

Now, let’s talk practical. We see teams with high end equipment and tone so perfect. Vocals so on point, guitars with amazing tone, drums tuned perfectly and an overall amazing mix. I can see how that can be a bummer and in some cases intimidating if you’re having to come in contact with this scenario. But this is what I constantly lived by and still do to this day, “do the best you can with what you have”. If what you have can get the job done, then you have everything that you need to advance into His kingdom. Also, we all start somewhere. Save and do some research on gear and learn to invest and budget wisely. You can find a few tips on how to do that here, On A Budget.

Finally, keep your vision fresh. I know that we can find ourselves feeling stuck and not able to move forward. I feel like we are in such a creative era, there so many wells to take in encouragement and inspiration. Make some goals, but don’t be in such a rush. You don’t want to step through a new door when you or your team may not be 100% ready to walk through.

We’re all flawed humans worshiping a perfect King. The only strive that we need to pursue is to see His presence fall. After that happens, everything will be perfect.

This is an overflow of creativity, knowledge, and experience. When given a talent, I quickly learned that it is for me to share. My passion is praising Jesus, and worshiping with my peers. My goal is to help upcoming and seasoned musicians reach their full potential. I love music, I love to worship. Here is your opportunity to do this with me. This is a time for me to be practical, to go in depth, to be honest. To make a sound louder than my guitars or amp with my drive to see others succeed. This, is An Honest Sound. -AO
